Hi Mark,

Thanks for you interest in and praise of the Five Point Alliance. Yes we are lucky to be based in the UK; there is a deep well of talent here. But I have to say that I have always felt that the US also has some amazing and inspirational hairdressers, and Hairbrained is a great way to get to see work I would otherwise miss.

Regarding the FPA, while based in the UK we are actually a global company whose goal is to unite the world’s most talented and inspirational technical educators. My self and the co-founder of the FPA are in a unique position in that we are totally independent; we do not run a salon so we have no allegiance to particular product companies, we do not have a media or magazine partner so we do not have to please advertisers. This means that we can represent hairdressers regardless of whether they are L’Oreal, Wella, or anyone and put them on the same stage where they can show their craft without any influence from product companies or product endorsements.

We are driven by passion for creativity and a desire to re-address the balance of hairdressing education that has become almost solely product company led and sponsored. We have no issue with product company education, we think it has an important place, but we want to balance it with education that is solely about technique and nothing else. We are, however a company and although I doubt it will ever make us rich and financial reward is not the principle goal, we do need to make money (or we hope to one day). We earn income from ticket sales for shows and seminars or from being paid by major shows and exhibitions to put on live demonstrations. Being un-sponsored however means we don’t have the budgets of the major companies so it’s a real up hill struggle to get recognised, especially at shows where the organisers are used to ‘selling’ stage time to product companies and we’re asking them to ‘pay us’ to use it!!!

How can you get involved? We need support in many ways and are keen to spread the word on the FPA in the USA. So you could help by:
• Recommending hairdressing individuals in the US who you believe are great technical hairdressers; not celebrities or those that rely on lavish stage shows and costumes, but those that can get on a stage and inspire with just a pair of scissors.
• If you have any contacts in the US hairdressing media, please introduce us so that we can send them our work and build a relationship.
• Spread the word about the FPA; get your friends to join us on Hairbrained, regularly check out our website.

Thanks again for your interest in us. The Five Point Alliance was created for hairdressers just like yourself, who love creativity and realise there is more to hairdressing than making money.

Best regards, Martyn
