Beauty in Black and White 2: Context

Podcast #2 a take on the power of 'context' in helping us better understand our lives and work. (A short 3 1/2 minutes but am working on getting them down to under 3!)

Still figuring out how to do these but it's a fun learning process so thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn something new and to put my thoughts out in a new way.

Comment by gordon miller on March 3, 2013 at 5:41pm: Gerard, it's a complicated conversation for sure. I think it starts by slicing and dicing the industry as we are not 'one' any longer (a soon to come podcsst!).

for comparison, in the business of food, those who prepare run the gamut from me in my kitchen, to burger flippers in fast food joints, short order cooks in diners, 'cooks' in independent restaurants, sous chefs and prep people in better places, chefs and master chefs. In our business, we have 'hairdressers'. and we have 'salons'.

To me, step one is to change the way we look at everything - as 'everything' has changed in the last 40 years (except the way people come into the business and how we self identify as working professionals).

Second is to get real about education and its role - which varies by what you want to do and where you are in the beauty 'ecosystem'.

And lastly, get very real about regulation -and why it exists (to protect consumers - ONLY). And get real about apprenticeships - which are virtually non existence in the industry (a good thing i'd argue as you have to know how to teach to have apprentices and that's a skill few have. you also have to have a business plan and modicum of success - something else missing for most; and a curriculum...and more...but dont get me started).

Fast thoughts on a very complex topic that needs a days conversation to dig into... :-)

Too many salons and hairdressers for the market is a problem, perhaps higher standards more rigorous apprenticeships and/or licenseing exams and a general focus and promotion of higher quality and prices.

This is what I would like to see, but it seems to be slipping in the opposite direction.
