Daniel Funk

International stylebook publisher Daniel Funk never intended to work in the professional beauty industry. What started as a two month graduation trip to Japan, ended up becoming a two year beginning to his new career in beauty, initially working for the publisher of Passion Stylebooks. “This would not have been an industry I would have chosen on my own,” shares Funk. “However, you realize any industry is comprised of people. The people in the salon industry are very personable, adventurous and entrepreneurial. They are my friends. If you are going to be happy, you need to like the people you work with and these individuals are great partners, professionally and personally.”

Funk, whose father is American and mother is Japanese, lived in Japan until age four. His military family moved frequently and by age ten he had attended six different grade schools. He attended the University of East Carolina at Greeneville, NC as a computer science and business major, spending six months in Costa Rica as an exchange student. After graduation, Funk felt a need to reconcile his own multicultural upbringing as a Japanese American and to rediscover his roots. He went to visit relatives in Japan for what was meant to be a two month trip. But Funk, who spoke little Japanese, grew restless shortly into the vacation. To keep him busy, his uncle found him a temporary job with a friend, who happened to be the publisher of Passion Stylebooks.

It was the early 1980s and was the beginning of the Japanese business boom. The Japanese company Dowa, meaning planning, was an advertising firm and printer. In Japan, the professional beauty industry and salons often used western models in their marketing and promotional imagery. American celebrities often appeared in Japanese advertising as well and the firm owned many images of western models, over time amassing their own photography library. Funk noted that previously, salon stylebooks had consisted of black and white illustrations, mostly for technical instruction and they were not visually compelling for salon clients. Passion Stylebooks became the prototype for the modern beauty stylebook with big, full color photographs that hairstylists often cut out and hung on their salon walls. Funk first worked as a fact checker, collecting salon credits and then got involved in sales, as he was a native speaker of English. Then, what began as a vacation turned into a complete career as Funk spent the next two years traveling, going to trade shows, meeting and interacting with individuals in all levels of the beauty industry. “It was an experience I would never have been given the opportunity to have had I stayed in the United States after graduation,” he notes.

In 1986, Funk decided to attend graduate school. He went back to the U.S. to enter UCLA for business classes. But, the lure of international travel once again took over. He accepted a job with an Indonesian timber firm and for the next six years again journeyed all over the world, keeping Los Angeles as his home base. Then, in 1991, Funk got a telephone call from Dowa Publishing in Japan. Passion International Stylebooks was having problems with distribution in the United States. Did Funk want to set up his own publishing and distribution company here in America? Funk enthusiastically took on the challenge and the American arm of Passion Beauty was born, with over 15 different publications including many ethnic salon stylebooks. The newest venture is also quickly flourishing, tools imported from Japan including shears, flat irons, blow dryers, hairbrushes and more.

Somehow during all this activity, Funk had time to marry and have a family. His hobbies include biking, mountain climbing, going to the beach and enjoying family time with his two daughters in his home state of California. He shares, “When you have young children, your outlook changes as they grow older. I believe in the value of hard work and perseverance. We are blessed for a reason – what you give out is what you get back, your karma. We have a duty to share our blessings as much as possible.”

Travel of course is also still a large part of his life and Funk continues to enjoy meeting beauty industry professionals. “Other people have taught me so much, those I have worked with and also each of the customers that I get to know. We’re always learning. In life, we are all students. I try to keep my head up and my eyes open and to not be closed to anything.”
