Avoid the "Mullet Effect"!

Make sure your clients hair is at least 4 inches long, make sure to use enough hair based on the thickness of the clients hair, and blend, blend, blend!

Welcome Style Seat! I love your website. It's such a great idea. Do you have many extension stylists listed?

I just saw another funny hair extension myth on Twitter that hair extensions are made from puppy hair. Had to share that one : )

Welcome, Rachelle! I saw that you are an educator. What type of education do you do?

Having trouble finding new extensions clients? They ARE out there. And they are waiting to have longer, fuller hair. Here are five marketing tips to find your next extensions client:

Be your own billboard. Wear the type of hair extensions that you are certified in, and get the conversation started with not only current clients but potential clients too.

Before & Afters. You could take before and after pictures on your smartphone OR you could partner up with a local photographer. Many times photographers have a tight budget when it comes to models, makeup artists, and stylists. If you partner up with them, all it will cost is your time. And if the photographer's pictures get posted anywhere, so will your name. Free advertising is always a good thing.

Social Media. This one seems obvious, but there are still many stylists out there that do not have their own business Facebook page. This page is ideal for posting specials to grab last minute clients when you aren’t fully booked, post before and after photos, give advice & tips, etc. Also, just by using social media for your business, the Google webcrawlers will also pick it up better when a person is doing a Google search for salons in your area.

Note: If you do start one, though, it is vital that you keep up with it. People will start to follow, and they expect new content, otherwise they will stop following you.

Host a promotion. Whether in your salon, at local festivals, or in the park, you have the potential to meet potential clients and start talking about your extensions services. You can have a "Free Color Extension Strand" promotion.

Even if you are installing the bright pink extension into a 6 year old girl, her mom is sure to be there and will ask you questions. That is when you start talking about how extensions aren't just used for length, but also volume. The market is booming with women 35-50 who want their hair to look like it did when they were 20, but for it also to look natural. And that is where you come in.

Be your own Groupon. Offer a deal once a week on a day that you are usually slow. Clients love knowing that they are saving money, and will try to find any way to justify getting a beautiful set of extensions. Get them started with extensions, and they won't want to go back to not wearing extensions. Boom. Loyal client for life.

Zoe, that is hilarious that the person thought extensions are made from horses manes and tails. Although, I wouldn't put it past some shady extension suppliers!

We are really big on education when it comes to the beauty industry. Of course, like you said, you would have preferred a firsthand critique being that it is ideal for learning the right way the first time. That shows that you are already a more passionate stylist and do believe in quality education, so that is great!

I was shocked before when I heard that some extension companies certify stylists after putting one or two strands on a mannequin in a large ballroom with over 100 stylists with little direction. But I had never heard of a company that did a mail in mannequin, though. I think all extension companies should definitely require application on a live model. You don't get the same reaction from a mannequin that you would a real person, so ultimately it does not prepare you fully for your first extensions client.

Regarding the sticker tape, I think it is great! At first I sort of had a negative view about them because I thought it would look unnatural and not blend well--I mean, your putting stickers in your hair! But we actually just added that to our product list, so I got to see firsthand how they were installed and the end result of how they look in the hair and it looked beautiful. My mind was completely changed. They blend in well and look natural, AND you can get them done on your lunch break ; ) The quick application is what I think most clients would be happy with.

You are right also that certain clients look for a more temporary option when it comes to extensions. That is why it is great to be certified in different methods so as to appeal to a few different extension client needs. That is, if that is the direction you want to take your career as a stylist. Though, it seems like hair extensions are among the most profitable services in salons today. So I don't know why any stylist wouldn't want to go that route. We have several clients that solely do extensions--no cuts, no color, no treatments--just extensions. And they do VERY well for themselves. Of course, some stylists are more passionate about doing cuts and colors, and more power to them!
